Prepared and maintained by Pinetree Legal Services, in Maine, this is a listing of organizations (and links) that offer free legal assistance to eligible clients or state-wide support to legal services programs. Most of the organizations are grantees of the Legal Services Corporation and subject to restrictions on the kinds of cases they may bring and income and practice area restrictions on clients they may represent.
Pine Tree Legal Services is a nonprofit corporation established in 1966 by private attorneys in Maine to meet the need for legal assistance by low-income residents. In attional to the substantial direct assistance they provide to low-income people in the state of Maine, they maintain a terrific website collection of links and materials. Pine Tree Legal Assistance was the second legal services program in the country to have a website, and the first to make client education and self-help materials available over the internet.
