Creating Change: LGBT/HIV Equality and Immigration

Creating Change, the largest annual gathering of activists, organizers, and leaders in the LGBT movement is taking place in Houston, Texas, at the Hilton of the Americas–Houston from January 29, 2014 to February 2, 2014. The conference is run by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and attracts more than 3,500 people from all over the country every year. CHLP's Legal Director, Iván Espinoza-Madrigal, will be conducting a workshop titled "LGBT/HIV Equality and Immigration." This workshop will focus on the rights of LGBT and HIV-affected people at the intersection of immigration and criminal justice systems. CHLP's Legal Director will address how efforts to criminalize HIV-affected people negatively impact immigration protection and relief. He will also explore strategies to counteract the criminalization of HIV, and explain how plans and proposals for overhauling the broken immigration system should be informed by the experiences of LGBT and HIV-affected immigrants. This workshop is scheduled for Saturday, February 1, 2014, at 10 AM.
