The DOJ Findings on the ADA in Tennessee, Part 2: How Advocates are Applying the Findings
As a result of a complaint filed by CHLP, the Department of Justice found that Tennessee’s enforcement of the aggravated prostitution statute against people living with HIV violates the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The historic findings are a result of the application of innovative strategies to challenge HIV criminalization statutes as a violation of federal laws that prohibit disability-based discrimination.
CHLP with the Equality Federation is presenting a three-part webinar series to talk about what it all means and how it might impact HIV advocacy. This first installment "Exploring the Facts" took place on December 19.
The second installment on HIV is Not a Crime Day, Tuesday, February 27 at 6pm CT, 7pm ET.
This virtual panel discussion turns to how various HIV decriminalization advocates are applying the DOJ findings and what this could mean for their work. We will also hear from a member of the OutMemphis v Lee legal team about the connections to their ongoing litigation. This discussion is a chance for those seasoned and new to HIV decriminalization to consider another tool in their advocacy belt by hearing from those also in the work.
Participants:
- Linda Dixon, Mississippi Center for Justice
- DeMarcus Jones, Tennessee HIV Modernization Coalition
- Nicole McAfee, Freedom Oklahoma
- Alexis Agathocleous, ACLU-National
