HIVMA Urges Repeal of HIV-Specific Criminal Statutes, The HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA), 2013
This is a statement issued by the HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA) on the urgent need to address and repeal HIV-specific criminalization statutes. The statement highlights the detrimental effects of HIV-specific criminalization and offers a statement of support for: the modernization of laws and practices to reflect current science and knowledge about HIV, the promotion of education addressing stigma associated with HIV-specific criminalization and a federal review of all federal and state laws, policies and regulations regarding criminal prosecutions for HIV-related offenses.
The HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA) of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) represents physicians, scientists and other health care professionals who practice on the frontline of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. HIVMA is also an endorser of the Positive Justice Project Consensus Statement on the Criminalization of HIV in the United States.
