Positive Justice Project Opposes Amendment to Missouri Law That Would Make Spitting a Felony
May 18, 2015
Even though there is no risk of transmitting HIV by spitting, Missouri House Bill 1181 proposed amending state law to make spitting a felony. In response, the Positive Justice Project (PJP) issued a letter in opposition to the bill citing substantial scientific authority that such a law was contrary to established scientific understanding of the transmission of HIV and may actually deter conduct and decisions that reduce disease transmission. The hearing on the bill was subsequently cancelled.
