The Grapevine: A Southern Trans Report: Prioritizing Issues Impacting Transgender, Gender Nonbinary, and Gender Nonconforming Southerners, Transgender Law Center and Southerners on New Ground (SONG) (2019)
There is a growing body of scholarship on the disproportionate rates of discrimination and violence against transgender, gender nonbinary, and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people in the Southern United States. There is much less data on which underlying social issues Southern TGNC communities identify as priorities themselves. “The Grapevine: A Southern Trans Report” contains reported data from 135 TGNC across 13 Southern states, including information about their lived experiences and key policy issues that both impact and motivate them.
Primary care and HIV-inclusive care was the top chosen issue across gender identities and racial or ethnic identities. However, more gender nonbinary and gender nonconforming participants chose law enforce- ment accountability compared to trans women, femmes, trans men, and masculine participants. Three out of four participants identified primary care and HIV-inclusive care as an issue they would mobilize on and change.
