Injustice at Every Turn: A Report of the National Transgender Discrimination Survey, Jaime M. Grant, Lisa A. Mottet, Justin Tanis, National Center for Transgender Equality, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (2011)

Based on a survey of more than 6,000 transgender and gender non-conforming participants, Injustice at Every Turn documents the impact of anti-transgender bias in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Survey topics included harassment; assault and discrimination in education; discrimination in employment and housing; abuse by police and in prison; and discrimination in health care.

Among the key findings of the report:

• Discrimination was pervasive throughout the entire sample, but people of color, in general, fare worse than white   participants across the board, with African American transgender respondents faring worse than all others in   many areas examined.
• Respondents were nearly four times more likely than the general population to have an annual household income  of less than $10,000.
• 41% of respondents reported attempting suicide compared to 1.6% of the general population.

Furthermore 63% of survey participants reported having experienced at least one serious act of discrimination - events that would have a major impact on a person’s quality of life and ability to sustain themselves financially or emotionally - and almost one quarter of participants had experienced a catastrophic level of discrimination, defined as three or more such life-disrupting events.
