Procedures for Handling Social Security Disability Appeals at the ALJ Hearing Level, Whitman-Walker Health (2009)
This guide describes the process and time line for handling an ALJ hearing for a client whose initial application and Request for Reconsideration for Social Security disability benefits have both been denied. It outlines the steps a volunteer should take in order to request a hearing, write the brief, and prepare to go before the ALJ. Practitioners' tips are provided to assist volunteers throughout the process of preparing for their hearings. The guide provides insight into the vocational assessment of the claimant, and explains important concepts involved in the SSA's analysis and determination of the severity of a disability and its impact on a claimant's ability to work. It also provides a time line for volunteers to remain aware of as they work on assisting their clients.
